But 2 mana vs 3 is not negligible.. so its more a tempo piece to help you beat other fast decks, not so great against control/attrition decks. Press question mark to learn the rest of the keyboard shortcuts. Members. Affinity's gameplan is to play out your hand as fast as possible, and then attack for a ton of damage. However, if Eidolon of Rhetoric can be put into play, storm has just one out in Echoing Truth. I would think that the fact that the Canonist costs one less mana and has an extra point of power, even though the eidolon has two extra toughness, would make the card a better fit for the deck, but it feels like I'm missing something. Grafdiggers Cage, Relic, Nihil Spellbomb, and Engineered Explosives are all really good against Abzan CoCo. Ethersworn Canonist bought out on TCG Player. The Canonist might slow your opponent down, but you're slowing yourself down as well. The Canonist might slow your opponent down, but you're slowing yourself down as well. Eidolon of Rhetoric dodges EVERYTHING listed above, and isn't a half bad blocker against Wild Nacatl decks. Canonist dies to more (bolt, darkblast, gut shot, electrolyze, forked bolt, zealous persecution, night of souls betrayal, ancient grudge, kolaghan's command... To name a few). It's only useful against storm, ad Nauseam and living end, and some fringe combo decks. also turns snapcaster into ambush viper. Infect runs rampant round here, so it just ruins them usually. I use whipflare in my main board (just because of local meta) but saw this card and was like wth?!? A 2 drop that doesn't kill your opponent is pretty slow for modern affinity. Especially when chorded for against the fast combo decks. 66.2k. it still dies to any removal spell, so its mostly used like a flagbearer to divert attention from the threats. [[Patrician's scorn]] will kill it, whereas otherwise they're looking for a slaughter pact or an echoing truth. I also don't run patrician's scorn so the number of outs are the same. Can anyone provide some insight for me for why that is? Eidolon of Rhetoric over Ethersworn Canonist? New comments cannot be posted and votes cannot be cast, More posts from the ModernMagic community. But you wouldnt being in eidolon in most of those matches anyway, so it doesnt matter. at my local tourneys its good for shutting down living end decks and a few young pyro/delver decks. Otherwise, I'd say eidelon wins out typically as the extra toughness does a lot vs. storm, and griselcannon will try and remove it via slaughter pact or bolts (so at least you limit their outs). I guess it is good against Thoughtcast? [MM] Pacts, Reveillark, Ethersworn Canonist, and more (self.magicTCG) submitted 6 years ago * by Elektrophorus This will be my last leak post since official spoilers start this week. i have 1 in the board. Canonist survives shreikmaw, but dies to ignore chewer. What am I missing? A subreddit dedicated to the discussion of Magic: The Gathering's Modern format! I'm not an Affinity pilot, nor did I ever played the deck for a long time, so I might be suggesting something stupid here; but isn't [[Whipflare]] a much better option against those type of decks? could do real work vs elves t2 on the play too, they tend to be answer light. That's 3 outs vs. 2 for the other hatebears. Cannonist is such a beating against a number of decks that you quite likely don't really see that often in your local meta. I have one in my SB. Eidolon of Rhetoric is SO MUCH BETTER than cannonist. Maybe it means I'm a bad player who knows but I often find I'd rather move other cards in. The effect is intrinsically trying to slow the game down, so a big butt also plays nicely with the ability. However, any spells on the stack as Ethersworn Canonist enters the battlefield have already been cast by that point, so they’re not affected by it. help Reddit App Reddit coins Reddit premium Reddit gifts. The only other decks I could see this effect being good are Ad Nauseum or Living End. I just never find myself siding them in. if you expect to see storm its also good there, but i haven't seen that in a while. This is a great example of a great sideboard card in legacy ending up not really cutting the mustard in modern. A lot of the time chording for canonist mid spell is all that's needed to put storm or ad nauseum away for good. The difference in toughness, and that more people pack artifact hate, and in general more of it, then enchantment hate. The key reason you run Canonist is because it's 2 CMC vs 3. One thing to note--against ad nauseam (which is fairly common) I'd rather have cannonist than eidelon (though both certainly aren't bad in the matchup). This is Reddit's hub for discussing speculating(2) and not for discussing speculating(1) about Magic: the Gathering cards. Ethersworn Canonist does not do anything to progress that gameplan, and to play it, you need to take out a card that does. 858. The serious, play-to-win side of the Magic: The Gathering community. It is hard to understate the value of 4 toughness when playing games where bolt is a pillar of the format. Most decks run it as a 2 of in the sideboard. Some decks have a few random artifacts (especially after board), and the decks that need silver bullets (abzan coco) are usually the ones hurt by those artifacts the most. Canonist seems to be more of a "I'm running heavy on artifacts, it doesn't hurt me much (affinity, thopter sword, lantern control, or tezzerator style decks)" or "I want a second copy of eidolon to tutor for, lets use canonist for cmc flexibility (chord or (pre banning) pod lists)". Online. Would you ever board into Eidolon vs Affinity? That 1 CMC difference matters a ton when Chording for answers (or trying to play them on a curve). If you have one in play and your ad nauseam opponent is looking for an out--they have an extra one out against eidelon. Unless you're looking at putting your win % over the top against combo decks that are all over your meta (which your favored against mostly anyway), I think you can find better things to take these slots. It only seems like they only play multiple spells per turn in the first turns of the game and then live off the top of the deck. Personally I'm more afraid of eidolon because it will prevent any other spell for the turn if you have a lotus bloom come off suspend or stop the second one if you have two. 4 toughness is a real wall in a bolt snap bolt format. As a Storm player, I'm more afraid of Eidolon out of the sideboard. Neither creature will likely beat a perfect storm draw especially if the storm player is on the play. Does Storm remove creatures with bolt so the fourth point of toughness is better than the pros of the Canonist? I have two in my sideboard but I'm debating taking them out. Living end's Shriekmaw does however hit EoR but not Canonist. Otherwise Pyroclasm, Bolt, Anger of the Gods, artifact hate, etc hit Canonist. I'm looking to build a sideboard against elves, Melina company, and infect. Eidolon with 4 toughness is harder to remove, and the point of power from Canonist, while not irrelevant, is negligible when looking for a powerful silver bullet imo. Bringing it in against zoo, tokens and affinity would be a mistake..Also, it has 2 toughness so it doesnt die to most of those things.. New comments cannot be posted and votes cannot be cast. Why haven't I seen it on the pro tour?!? If you want to side specifically against those decks it's alright but I'd prefer my own spot removal combined with aether grid. Ethersworn Canonist does not do anything to progress that gameplan, and to play it, you need to take out a card that does. Press J to jump to the feed. The two points of toughness matter. Would she be a worthy slot amongst my whip flares and spellskites? Press J to jump to the feed. I board in Pyroclasm/Anger of the Gods vs Abzan Company, which both kill Canonist incidentally.
